SS-31
An aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide with an affinity for cardiolipin. A peptide analogue, supplied as a lyophilised powder.
- A four-residue peptide (D-Arg – dimethyltyrosine – Lys – Phe-amide), also known as elamipretide or MTP-131.
- It alternates positively charged and aromatic residues — hence the "aromatic-cationic" label.
- Unlike most peptides in this catalogue it does not act through a receptor on the cell surface; the described target is the inner mitochondrial membrane.
- Supplied as a lyophilised powder for reconstitution.
- Published work describes binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid found in the cell almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
- Cardiolipin holds the enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain together; the literature examines how binding of the peptide affects it.
- Electron transfer efficiency and the formation of reactive oxygen species are followed.
- The peptide is neither an enzyme nor an inhibitor of one — the described effect is structural.
- Mitochondrial bioenergetics and the respiratory chain.
- Models of mitochondrial myopathy.
- Oxidative stress and its markers.
- Composition and stability of inner-membrane phospholipids.
SS-31 has gone through clinical trials in several indications; a phase 3 study in primary mitochondrial myopathy missed its primary endpoint, and approval has not followed so far. The preclinical literature is extensive and is tied to the conditions it comes from.
SS-31 is a pharmacologically active substance with the character of a drug. This item is a reference standard intended exclusively for laboratory and research use. It is not a medicine, it is not registered for administration to humans and it must not be used for diagnosis, prevention or treatment. We provide no dosing, protocols or health recommendations. The buyer is responsible for compliance with the law in force at the place of delivery and for safe handling in line with laboratory practice.
The efficacy and safety of administering this substance to humans are not sufficiently established clinically. The information given here is solely a summary of published research findings, predominantly from laboratory and animal models. It constitutes neither a health claim nor a recommendation for use in humans. The product is intended strictly for research purposes and is not a medicine.

- Solvent
- Bacteriostatic water (Bac Water) — available as a separate item in the Supporting products category.
- Procedure
- Run the solvent down the wall of the vial, not directly onto the lyophilised powder. Do not shake the vial — swirl gently until fully dissolved.
- Note
- We provide no dosing protocols and no recommendations for use in humans. What is given here are laboratory handling procedures only.
- Lyophilised (unreconstituted)
- −20 °C, in the dark, in the original packaging.
- After reconstitution
- 2–8 °C, protected from light. Do not refreeze repeatedly.
- Transport
- Neutral packaging, no cold chain. A short-term rise in temperature during transit has no material effect on the lyophilised powder.
